Education in Kenya
Currently Kiwimbi operates in Kenya’s Busia County where, in 2020, children had among the worst performance on key national examinations of anywhere in Kenya. These results quite simply mean that the majority of the kids in these rural communities (in some villages, more than 95%) cannot advance to secondary (high) school.
Kiwimbi’s Impact
In contrast, where Kiwimbi has been able to focus our efforts, the passing rate has been 40%, well above the national average. Our academic programs are complemented by our Library and Community Learning Centre, which is patronized by hundreds of children and adults daily and lends books to 72 schools. This means that more than 46,000 students have access to books that would otherwise be unavailable. Even for children who cannot participate in our more focused programs, this is a huge benefit- making literacy achievable in remote villages.
Recognizing that kids need a future even if they do not progress academically, Kiwimbi also provides vocational training in tailoring, carpentry, sustainable farming and the arts.
